What are Plugins

Plugins are programs you download and install to your blog.  These programs help your blog with different functions such as Social sharing, SEO, Security, backups

How do I find Plugins

From your WordPress Dashboard, you will click the Plugins link and Search by name or type

How do I install Plugins

Simple one click install from your Dashboard
Some plugins require setup for them to function the way you need

Click on Search to bring up the Search field

In this pictorial example, we show you how to search for and install the Sociable plugin so that your visitors can share your posts across multiple Social platforms

You will enter the word Sociable (or whatever plugin you are looking for) into the search field.  Press Search Plugins.

The system returns the results based on your search term.  In this example, it returned many results for Sociable.  We want to choose the first option.

Once installed, you will need to activate the new plugin

Your new plugin is now installed and activated

The final results – you see the Sociable plugin on my blog at www.WhoIsJanetLegere.com which is my “training” blog.

Recommended Plugins

Here are the basic Plugins we recommend.  While there are many to choose from, these are the ones that I feel are absolutely necessary

Akismet – MUST HAVE – prevents spam comments
Bullet Proof Security – keeps your blog safe
Google Privacy Policy – required by US laws
SI Captcha Anti-Spam – keeps spammers from posting comments
Sociable – allows your visitors to share your posts
Wordpress Database Backup – so you can keep regular backups of your blog content

All in One SEO Pack – helps your blog be found by the Search engines
Contact Form 7 – allows you to receive communication from your visitors
Diggz.et – allows your visitors to “Digg” your site
Google XML Site Maps – allows visitors to get a quick glimpse of your website
